Analogue Photography – Munich – 1990s

The 90s - an era that is associated with nostalgia and special memories for many. One artist who captured this time in a unique way is the graduate designer (FH) Charles S. Kuzmanovic. His medium of choice was analogue photography, and his canvas was the pulsating heart of Munich - Marienplatz.

In the 90s, photography was not just a hobby for Charles, but a passion that drove him to capture the world around him in an impressive way. With a darkroom he set out to master the art of black and white photography. His trips through Munich, or as we would call them today, "photo walks", became a timeless chronicle of urban life.

The black and white photos presented here were taken in the mid to late 1990s, when Charles looked at Marienplatz and its surroundings through his lens. The images reveal not only the architectural beauty of the city, but also the atmosphere and attitude to life of this special era.

If you look closely at the photographs, you feel transported back to a time when the hustle and bustle of Marienplatz was characterized by the characteristic elements of the 90s: people strolling through the streets with Walkmans in their ears, fashion that captures the spirit of this era, and of course the unmistakable architecture that characterizes Munich.

Choosing black and white photography gives the images a timeless elegance and emphasizes details and contrasts in a way that color photographs might not be able to achieve.

These photographs are not only visual documents of a bygone era, but also artistic expressions of a photographer who captured his love for the city of Munich in every image. They serve as a window to a time when the world was not yet dominated by digital cameras and instant filters, but by the craft of photography and developing.

Charles S. Kuzmanovic's black and white photographs from the 1990s take us on a journey into the past, a time frozen in the images and brought back to life through the photographer's lens. The Marienplatz in Munich becomes a stage on which the story of this city is told in every shadow and every line.
